The nautilus is the shell people mean when they say “seashell earrings” and picture something sculptural rather than cute. It is a chambered spiral, it has been drifting through the same oceans for hundreds of millions of years, and when it is cut and polished the inside turns out to be lined with a nacre that shifts through the whole rainbow. This is a guide to how we choose them, cut them, set them, and which pair to wear.

What the shell actually is
A nautilus builds its shell in chambers, sealing each one behind it as it grows and living in the newest. Slice the shell and you see the spiral of sealed chambers — the shape that has been drawn in every geometry textbook since the Renaissance. Every pair we set is cut from a genuine nautilus shell, sourced from vintage estate collections rather than harvested, which is why no two pairs are the same and why some are available once and never again.

The outside of the shell is cream with tiger-stripe bands of brown. The inside, once the outer layer is removed, is pure nacre: the same iridescent mother-of-pearl that lines a pearl oyster. Depending on how the shell is finished, you get one of four looks.
The four finishes, in our vocabulary
Pearl
The outer layer removed entirely, leaving the nacre. A soft, neutral luster that reflects light the way a pearl does — and in direct sun, a rainbow iridescence that photographs make look almost blue. This is the finish in the Large Pearl and Small Pearl pairs, and it is where most brides land.

Jaguar
The outer layer left in place, so the brown-and-cream banding shows. Warmer, bolder, and the one that reads as pattern from across a room. The Large Jaguar is the statement version; the Small Jaguar wears it daily.

Two-Toned
Half and half: nacre on one face, natural banding on the other, so the earring changes as you turn. The Small Two-Toned is the pair we sell most, for exactly that reason — it is two earrings in one and it goes with everything.

Banded
The natural stripes kept and polished to a high gloss. Graphic, almost architectural. The Oversized Banded pair is the largest thing we make.
There is a fifth, quieter option: the Mini Blue, where the shell’s cooler tones are brought forward. Small, and very good with silver.
Size: from mini to oversized
Mini and Small sit close to the ear and work as an everyday earring. Medium is the first size that reads as a statement. Large is the destination-wedding size. Oversized is for people who have decided the earrings are the outfit. Because the shells are natural, size within a pair is matched by hand from many candidates — the two shells in any pair are chosen to sit as mirror images.
Encased or open
Some pairs are encased — the shell is set inside a sterling frame, as in the 925 Silver Encased Cascade. Others are open, with the shell edge exposed and only a backplate behind it. Encased is more protected and more formal. Open shows more shell and sits lighter.

The backplate: silver, vermeil, or solid gold
Every nautilus pair is made-to-order, hand-set in our Austin studio on a backplate you choose. 925 sterling silver is the standard. 18K gold vermeil over 925 warms the nacre without the weight of solid gold. Solid 18K gold is the version that lasts forever and is priced accordingly — the same shell, on a solid gold backplate, is the top of our range. The shell does not change between them; the metal behind it does.
Post, clip-on, or omega
Small and Mini pairs come on a push post. Larger pairs offer an omega push-back — a hinged clip behind the post that takes the weight off the piercing and holds a big earring upright all evening. Clip-on is available on most sizes for non-pierced ears. If a pair is going to be worn for a long day, the omega is the fitting we recommend.
Weight, and what to expect
Natural shell is light for its size; the metal is what adds weight. A Small pair on a silver post is an all-day earring. A Large pair on a solid gold backplate is a sit-down-dinner earring. If you are between sizes and plan to dance, size down or choose the omega back.
Caring for them
Nacre is soft. Keep the shells away from perfume and sunscreen, wipe them with a dry cloth after salt water, and store each pair flat and separate so the edges do not rub. Silver and vermeil will tarnish slightly with time; a silver cloth brings them back. We cover this in more detail in our care guide.
Every pair in the Nautilus Shell Earrings collection is set to order. Because each shell is a natural one-of-one, if you have a specific look in mind — more pattern, less, cooler or warmer — tell us when you order and we will choose the shells to match.
