Vintage Margot de Taxco Silver Shell Brooch

This vintage Margot de Taxco sterling silver shell brooch captures the sculptural modernism that made mid-century Taxco silver internationally collectible. Produced in Margot de Taxco’s workshop in Taxco, Mexico, the stylized scallop shell transforms an organic coastal motif into something precise, architectural, and quietly dramatic.

Sculpted flutes radiate across the sterling silver shell and meet two mirrored spirals at the base. Polished highlights contrast with darkened recesses, giving every curve depth, rhythm, and an almost liquid glow.

Margot van Voorhies Carr founded her independent Margot de Taxco workshop in 1948 after serving as the principal early designer for Los Castillo. At a time when Taxco’s silver world was largely led by men, she was one of the few women to direct a major workshop. Margot created the designs and guided the skilled silversmiths who translated her drawings into wearable form. Her work remains instantly recognizable for its precision, organic movement, and singular point of view.
